More than a hundred years ago, two aircraft were refueled in the air for the first time. It was risky and relied on basic technology. Mit seinem hochentwickelten Boom-System kann der A330 MRTT bis zu 4.500 Liter Treibstoff pro Minute übertragen. Auch das klassische Schlauch- und Trichterverfahren ist weiterhin möglich mit bis zu 1.500 Litern pro Minute. Die Maschine erreicht eine Reichweite von bis zu 16.000 Kilometern und unterstützt derzeit die Luftwaffen von 15 Nationen, darunter Australien, Frankreich, Saudi-Arabien, Südkorea und Großbritannien.
Since 2022, the A330 MRTT has been the first tanker aircraft in the world to offer automatic air-to-air refueling (A3R) through boom systems. Airbus is not stopping there. The company is already developing the next stage: fully autonomous refueling, known as A4R.
The conversion of an A330 passenger aircraft into an MRTT takes about nine months. Around 50,000 modifications are made during this process. It also requires approximately 100,000 working hours. Airbus is already planning the next upgrade. The future A330 MRTT+ will use the newer A330-800neo as its base. This change will lower fuel consumption. It will also increase range or payload.
Langfristig will Airbus auch neue militärische Rollen erschließen. Die beim MRTT-Programm gesammelten Erfahrungen fließen unter anderem in die Entwicklung einer maritimen Patrouillenversion des Airbus A321XLR ein. Erste Studien hierzu laufen bereits, etwa im Rahmen eines Vertrags mit der französischen Rüstungsbeschaffungsbehörde.
Der Airbus A330 MRTT zeigt eindrucksvoll, wie europäische Luftfahrttechnologie heute globale Maßstäbe setzt von der Erhöhung der strategischen Autonomie bis hin zur schnellen Hilfe in humanitären Krisen.
